Schwab API development, done by trading system engineers

Schwab's Trader API opened programmatic access to one of the largest retail brokerages in the US — accounts, orders, and market data for self-directed traders, plus separate API tracks for fintech providers and RIA platform integrations. It also inherited a reputation: the developer approval queue, the OAuth dance with 30-minute access tokens, the seven-day refresh window that has quietly killed more hobbyist bots than any market crash, and details the docs underexplain — like account numbers that must be referenced by hash value, not the number itself. None of this is a reason to avoid the API. All of it is a reason to build on it properly.

FintegrationFS is a fintech engineering studio, not a gig marketplace. Our engineers build automated trading systems and broker integrations professionally — token lifecycles, order management, and multi-account systems running live. 12+ years of fintech engineering, official technology partnerships with Alpaca and Plaid, US office, fixed-scope pricing.

Which Schwab API track are you on?

Schwab's developer platform serves three very different builders, and your track determines everything downstream:

  • Trader API — Individual — self-directed traders automating their own brokerage accounts: equities and options order placement, positions, balances, and market data.

  • Third-party fintech APIs — letting Schwab clients access their accounts inside your application, with the compliance posture that implies.

  • Advisor platform APIs — for fintech providers integrating with Schwab Advisor Center to serve RIAs: the institutional track, and the highest-value one.

Most of what's written online covers only the first track. We build on all three — and knowing which one your project actually needs is the first thing we resolve in a free scoping call.

What our Schwab developers build

Token lifecycle infrastructure that doesn't die on day seven. Automated access-token refresh, proactive handling of the seven-day refresh-token window, secure token storage, and — where a fresh login is unavoidable — a re-auth workflow that takes you thirty seconds, not a weekend of debugging a silently dead bot.

Automated trading strategies. Your rules executing against Schwab — equities and options order placement with the account-hash handling, error recovery, and duplicate-order protection the API's quirks demand, plus a kill switch that always works.

TD Ameritrade API migrations. Systems built on the retired TDA API ported to Schwab's endpoints — auth model, order semantics, and streaming differences reconciled deliberately, validated side-by-side before cutover, so a forced migration doesn't become a forced rewrite.

Options automation. Multi-leg strategies, rolling logic, and position management for the thinkorswim-native crowd — the platform itself isn't scriptable through the API, but your strategy logic is portable, and we port it.

Portfolio dashboards and reporting. Positions, balances, and transaction history across accounts pulled into dashboards, tax tooling, or your own analytics — refreshed automatically within the API's rate limits.

Integration rescue and audits. Inherited a Schwab integration that dies weekly, throws mysterious 401s, or was half-migrated from TDA? We audit the token handling, order flow, and error paths — then stabilize and document it.

How we work — fixed scope, no surprises

  1. Free scoping call (30 minutes). We map your strategy, accounts, and API track — including the developer-approval lead time so it never blocks the build.

  2. Architecture and a fixed quote. Token lifecycle, order flow, and failure handling designed up front — fixed price, fixed timeline.

  3. Build with staged validation. Schwab's individual API offers no rich paper-trading sandbox, so we validate the way professionals do: full logic testing against recorded data, then live deployment at minimal size with every order supervised before scale-up.

  4. Go-live and support. Monitoring and alerts from day one, documentation your team owns.

What a Schwab engagement looks like

A TDA refugee gets a permanent home. A trader whose TD Ameritrade bot died with the API migration gets a clean Schwab rebuild: same strategy logic, new auth and order layer, automated token management with alerting before the seven-day window closes — and a system that survives Schwab's quirks instead of being surprised by them.

An options income strategy goes hands-off. A wheel-style options program automated end to end: position scanning, multi-leg order construction, rolling rules, and assignment handling — deployed at reduced size first, scaled only after live behavior matches the design.

A wealth-tech product integrates Schwab accounts. A fintech serving advisors builds on the appropriate API track: account data flowing into its platform, the OAuth consent experience done properly, and the compliance boundaries respected by architecture rather than by hope.

Schwab API development FAQs

How do you solve the seven-day token problem?

By engineering for it instead of pretending it away: Schwab's refresh tokens operate on a seven-day window, and community reports differ on whether continuous refreshing extends it — so we build for the conservative case. That means automated refresh while the system runs, secure token persistence, alerting well before expiry, and a re-login workflow reduced to under a minute when it's needed. Your bot should never discover token death by missing a trade.

Can you migrate my TD Ameritrade API system to Schwab?

Yes — it's one of our most common Schwab engagements. The auth model, endpoint semantics, and account referencing all changed; a literal port produces subtle bugs. We map the differences explicitly, run old logic against the new integration side-by-side, and cut over only when behavior matches.

How long does Schwab's developer approval take, and can you speed it up?

Approval is a manual process on Schwab's side — typically a few business days, sometimes longer — and nobody can honestly promise to accelerate it. What we do instead: start the application on day one of the engagement and build everything that doesn't require production access in parallel, so approval is never the critical path.

Is there a paper trading environment?

Not a meaningful one on the individual Trader API — which is exactly why our validation process exists: strategy logic proven against historical and recorded data, then a staged live launch at minimal position sizes with full supervision. If you want a richer simulation loop first, deploying via QuantConnect's Schwab integration is an option we'll scope honestly.

Can you automate my thinkorswim strategy?

The thinkorswim platform and its studies aren't directly scriptable through the API — but your strategy's logic is. We re-implement the rules (including thinkScript indicators) in code that trades through the Trader API, validated against the signals you see on your charts before it touches live orders.

Will your system guarantee profits?

No — and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. We build faithful implementations of your rules with risk controls that limit the damage when markets don't cooperate. Edge is yours; execution engineering is ours.

How long does a Schwab integration take?

A focused automation or dashboard: 2–4 weeks (plus Schwab's approval lead time, run in parallel). A TDA migration or options automation suite: 4–8 weeks. Fintech and advisor-track integrations: 8–12+ weeks. Fixed timeline in the quote, not an estimate that drifts.

Do you sign NDAs? Who owns the strategy and code?

NDAs are standard before you share a single rule. You own 100% of the code, logic, and IP — delivered in your repositories with documentation. We never reuse client strategy logic.
